England v South Africa (First Test)

09 July 2017

Joe's Test captaincy got off to a flying start with a 211-run win in the first Test against South Africa at Lord's.

With England batting first, Joe came in at 17-2 and made an incredible 190 runs, including 27 fours and a six, to push his team on to 458 all out.

South Africa scored 361 in reply and Joe added five as England scored 233 in their second innings before the visitors were bowled out for 119.

"Everyone has played their part this week," Joe said. "It might not have been a six-for or a fifty, but there were crucial periods where guys showed character.

"Everything I asked of the lads, they were very open to and responded to it. I wanted us to be proactive, to stay ahead of the game and when there was an opportunity, to take responsibility. Everyone at certain points did that and it's important we continue to do that if we are to take this side forward."

The second Test starts at Trent Bridge on Friday.
